REGION: The challenges of a regional response on public health

The global nature of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has both highlighted the importance of international cooperation and prompted a retreat into nationalism by governments struggling to meet the needs of their health systems. Brazil and the Southern Cone countries have not been exempt from this trend: the race to acquire medical equipment has provoked bilateral tensions, while at the same time leaders have called for the use of existing multilateral institutions to coordinate a regional response.
