US provides more aid to Ecuador

Chile/Region: On 7 May US President Donald Trump spoke with Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera. According to a White House press release, the two leaders “discussed the approaches their countries are taking to tackle the coronavirus pandemic”. President Trump offered US “assistance to help Chile provide critical care to its citizens”, although the nature of this assistance was not specified. In the same statement President Trump “praised Chile’s proactive and balanced approach to protecting the health and livelihoods of Chileans”. On 2 May Bolivia’s interim President Jeanine Áñez and Paraguay’s President Mario Abdo Benítez tweeted their appreciation of similar phone calls with Trump, with Abdo Benítez specifying that Trump had offered a donation of ventilators. A 6 May press statement by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo indicates that the US has disbursed US$900m in global health and humanitarian assistance to more than 120 countries and that it had earmarked a further US$128m. However, it does not specify which countries received funds or support.
