Argentina does a U-turn on Mercosur

Argentina is either opting out of all future Southern Common Market (Mercosur) trade negotiations – as announced on 24 April – or, on the contrary, it is continuing to “advance jointly” with them – as it subsequently announced on 7 May. The country’s exact position on international trade is therefore something of a mystery. What is clear is that there is a profound malaise over trade policy which is distancing the Argentine government of President Alberto Fernández from the three other Mercosur members, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
