Pandemic does not stop violence
Despite the social distancing guidelines introduced by the government in late March to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19), and even though this has reduced drug trafficking activity, the levels of violence in Mexico have not subsided. In fact, March was the most violent month since President Andrés Manuel López Obrador assumed office in December 2018, with a record number of homicides. Nothing suggests that the situation will improve in the short-term, not least because the government is not planning to adjust its national security strategy in response to this.
