* El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has announced that he will issue a decree to reopen the country’s construction sector which, like all non-essential business activity, has remained suspended as part of efforts to stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19). President Bukele’s announcement came in response to Tropical Storm 'Amanda', the first named storm of the Pacific hurricane season, which recently hit the country, causing landslides, flooding, and damage to homes and businesses. On 31 May the government declared a state of emergency over the storm. According to the environment ministry (Marn) as of 2 June 20 people had died, six had gone missing, and 24,873 families had been affected by Amanda. The worst hit areas are the departments of San Salvador and La Libertad. The national assembly has approved a legislative reform redirecting US$389m from an International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan, intended to address the impact of Covid-19, to help tackle the impact of the storm. The US government has also announced that it will donate emergency relief supplies valued at US$120,000 for Salvadoreans affected by Amanda.
