Fears of another ‘pandemic’

The United Nations (UN) World Food Programme (WFP) and Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) are among various international bodies warning of a risk of a “hunger pandemic”, citing fears that the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic could almost double acute hunger by 2020. Among the areas likely to suffer most are the four countries in the so-called ‘Central America Dry Corridor’ (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua), the name given to the tropical dry forest region on Central America’s Pacific Coast, where food scarcity is already a problem as crops have recently failed.
