MEXICO: Militarisation of public security formalised

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador may have pledged that his government would relieve the armed forces of all policing duties and return them to their barracks. But his government has just confirmed that the military will continue carrying out public security duties and spearhead the fight against organised crime until the end of his term in 2024. López Obrador had said that the national guard (GN) – the new federal public security force created by his government – would assume the responsibility of ensuring public security and fighting crime from the military. The confirmation that the armed forces will continue to be involved in policing duties looks like an admission that the GN is still not fit for this purpose and that it will not provide a definitive solution to insecurity in Mexico.
