GUYANA-SURINAME: Incumbents cling to power

Preliminary electoral results released this week in Guyana, after a protracted recount, and Suriname reveal that the incumbents were defeated. Neither Guyana’s President David Granger nor Suriname’s President Desi Bouterse, however, look like going quietly. Granger delivered a national address undermining the recount process, due to be concluded on 16 June, after the local media reported that his ruling coalition had been narrowly defeated by the opposition. Granger cited numerous irregularities, alleging manipulation of the electoral process. Bouterse has been more circumspect but so far he appears bent on staying put. Without a transition of power in accordance with the will of voters expressed at the ballot box both countries face democratic constitutional crises.
