This week Nicaragua’s opposition grouping Coalición Nacional wrote a letter to the United Nations Secretary General António Guterres requesting “urgent measures”, such as the designation of a special envoy to Nicaragua, in response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The letter followed the latest call on 1 June by over 30 local doctors’ associations for the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega to implement a national lockdown, citing an “exponential rise” in cases which, they warned, have caused a “collapse of Nicaragua’s public and private healthcare system”.
