Mexico - June 2020

Auto industry back on the road to recovery

After remaining closed for about two months due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, Mexico’s car and auto parts manufacturers restarted operations in the last week of May. As a result, some 22,119 units were assembled in May. This production data was better than expected, as it was initially unlikely that production would start before June given that the federal government measures introduced to stop the spread of Covid-19 had put a stop to all non-essential activities until then. But the units produced in May is still a fraction of the pre-pandemic production levels and the industry is going to have to operate on overdrive if it is to make up for the time it has had to remain idle this year.
