MEXICO: López Obrador guns for institutions to amass power

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is moving to concentrate more power in his hands. He signalled his intent this week to dismantle Mexico’s multi-faceted institutional structure not by taking a wrecking ball to it but “bit by bit”. López Obrador condemned the country’s 100-odd autonomous government institutions as costly, ineffective, and vestiges of the “neo-liberal period”. The political opposition accused him of trying to eliminate executive constraints, which serve to bolster the state’s credibility, under the guise of austerity.
