COLOMBIA: Coca crackdown threatens lives and livelihoods

The arrival of 45 US soldiers in Colombia in early June – the Security Force Assistance Brigade (SFAB), tasked with supporting the country’s military in its fight against drug trafficking - was not without precedent. For 15 years between 2000 and 2015, ‘Plan Colombia’ saw the US provide massive assistance (including troop deployments) to Colombian counter-narcotics operations, and above all to coca eradication efforts – largely fighting a losing battle, as Colombia continued to produce more cocaine than any other country in the world.
