CHILE: Concerns over drug trafficking

“Some people think that the fight against drugs is a losing battle, and are prepared to give in. This president and our government […] will never give in,” Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera declared on 9 June, after signing a bill to modify the country’s drugs law and introduce tougher sentences for drug traffickers. An emphasis on security has long formed part of Piñera’s agenda. This latest reform comes amid reports that drug trafficking in Chile is a growing problem, and a growing worry for the population.
