MEXICO: Presence of Cuban doctors stirs controversy

The presence of a brigade of Cuban doctors in Mexico, ostensibly to help combat the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, has sparked controversy both at home and in the US. There are complaints that the help of the Cuban physicians is coming at a considerable financial cost; that the assistance they have provided has been minimal; and that the money could have been better spent otherwise. Some have accused the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of contracting the doctors to help bankroll the Cuban government. There are also accusations that some of the doctors are actually Cuban spies. All of this has raised concerns in the US, with US legislators sending strong signals that the US could impose sanctions on the Mexican government for helping its Cuban counterpart.
