Fierce struggle breaks out ahead of Ecuador’s elections

Ecuador’s presidential race is off to an eventful start. The big news is not who will be running, but who will not be running and who is trying to run. Guillermo Lasso, the leader of the centre-right Movimiento Creo, who has finished second in each of the last two elections, will stand for a third-straight time next February. But there will be no presidential bid from the four-times mayor of Guayaquil (2000-2019) and early frontrunner in the polls, Jaime Nebot. Former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017) revealed, meanwhile, that he will stand for the vice-presidency if he can do so without facing arrest. Correa will be eligible to stand if he wins an appeal against his April conviction for aggravated bribery, or the case is unsettled. The appeal is taking place against the backdrop of an institutional showdown between the national electoral council (CNE) and the comptroller general’s office.
