BRAZIL: Pressure to protect the environment grows

President Jair Bolsonaro has always batted away criticism of his government’s approach to environmental sustainability, notably regarding the conservation of the Amazon, by saying that critics distort the truth and that Brazil is one of the countries doing most to protect the environment. More than 18 months into his presidency, as deforestation figures and statements from indigenous peoples paint a clear picture of the environmental destruction that his government has allowed, and even encouraged, Bolsonaro has not altered this discourse – but the pressure for him to change the course of his government’s environmental policy is mounting.
