Faced with renewed public protests over the response to the socioeconomic fallout from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera has announced another economic relief package. This time the relief measures provide assistance to Chile’s middle class, which is now starting to suffer the economic effects of the quarantine measures that have been implemented to try to control the Covid-19 outbreak. Prior to the onset of the pandemic, Chile saw widespread protests against social inequality, which ultimately led the Piñera administration to concede that fundamental changes to Chile’s economic and political model are needed. The public health emergency has further exposed these inequalities, increasing the pressure on the government to address the issue to prevent renewed social unrest.
