Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador finally notched up his first international air miles this week since coming to power in December 2018. He met his US peer Donald Trump in Washington, holding the first of two meetings on 8 July. On the surface López Obrador’s first destination made perfect sense, underpinning a strategic alliance with by far Mexico’s most important trading partner, with which it also shares a pressing security and immigration agenda.
