VENEZUELA: Opposition hold out hope for US intervention

In a 10 July interview with US television channel Telemundo, US President Donald Trump commented that “something will be happening with Venezuela”, and that the US will “be very much involved”. Trump has rarely not been involved in Venezuelan politics in recent years, but such vague commitments have repeatedly frustrated US allies in the country. His comment that opposition leader Juan Guaidó “seems to be losing a certain power” will ring further alarm bells. This is not the first time that Trump’s hesitant support has undermined his supposed ally, but with the country at a crossroads, many in Venezuela are holding out hope for a more decisive show of US support in the near future.
