EL SALVADOR: Criticism mounts over government response to pandemic

Human rights ombudsman (PDDH) José Apolonio Tobar recently warned that “maintaining levels of confrontation between…the executive and legislature is only causing the number of Salvadoreans infected and dying from coronavirus (Covid-19) to increase”. His unvarnished criticism of top officials, which follows months of political tensions between President Nayib Bukele and the opposition-controlled legislative assembly, comes as doctors and health care workers have begun protesting both the absence of a coherent government plan to address the health emergency and lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), while the international NGO Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) also recently warned that the health system is collapsing.
