ARGENTINA: Spying scandals and corruption cases
The political differences which divide Argentina, notably over the response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, are also playing out in the criminal justice sphere. Former president Mauricio Macri (2015-2019) has come under fire from the incumbent Peronist government following revelations that the Agencia Federal de Investigación (AFI), the national intelligence agency, supposedly engaged in illegal spying practices under his administration. Macri and his supporters argue that the emergence of these allegations is just a distraction from the problems that President Alberto Fernández’s government currently faces on multiple fronts. These problems include the various corruption cases concerning former president (2007-2015) and incumbent vice president Cristina Fernández, who appears to have benefited from a number of judicial developments recently.
