MEXICO: Returning to the top table

It is often said that Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is not interested in foreign policy. He has not attended a single international leaders’ summit since assuming office in December 2018, leaving the country only once to conduct an official visit to the US in early July. But nonetheless the López Obrador administration has been taking significant steps in the background to reinforce Mexico’s position on the international stage. The most significant of these has been securing a seat for the country at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2021-2022 period.
