The global coronavirus pandemic, which arrived in Venezuela in March 2020, is a major additional economic problem. The country suffers both direct and indirect effects. Direct effects include the negative impact on already-weakened domestic economic activity caused by enforced lockdown/quarantine measures, social distancing, and added strain on the country’s already overstretched and under-funded public health system. Indirect effects include the impact of lower international oil prices and falling global trade.
