In brief: El Salvador’s tourism ministry warns of coronavirus impact

* El Salvador’s tourism ministry (Mitur) has released new figures which suggest that the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has cost the country US$1.15bn in lost revenue. Tourism Minister Morena Valdez said that job losses for the sector hovered between 30% and 40%. Prior to the pandemic, the sector generated 300,000 direct and indirect jobs. The tourism sector is due to begin reopening as of 19 September, in line with the new framework for reopening the economy, which began on 24 August, after earlier stops and starts.
