José Guillermo Zozaya, has said that the sector has seen a recovery in the production and export of vehicles since the economy began reopening in June, following the restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19). Zozoya made his comments in an interview with industry magazine
Indicador Automotriz. The latest figures from Amia show that a total of 294,946 cars were produced in July 2020, a 0.7% increase on the same month in 2019. However, the figures also show that the accumulated total of cars produced in the first seven months of the year fell by 35.5% compared with the same period in 2019, down to 1.47m. A total of 256,068 cars were exported in July, down 5.5% on the same month in 2019, while the accumulated number of cars exported in the first seven months totalled 1.27m, down 36.8% on the same period in 2019. According to Zozoya, the car industry accounts for 3.8% of Mexico’s GDP, and provides 980,000 direct jobs and 3.6m indirect jobs.
