TRINIDAD-SURINAME-GUYANA: Stability at last

There is a sense of considerable relief that the electoral cycle has at last been completed along the north-east shoulder of South America. At a time of mounting concern over Venezuela, the long drawn-out contest for power in Guyana has finally been resolved; the dubious ascendancy of convicted drug-trafficker and murderer Desi Bouterse in Suriname has been brought to a peaceful end; while in Trinidad & Tobago the electorate has opted for continuity with the re-election of Keith Rowley and his People’s National Movement (PNM). The international community will be most happy with the outcomes in Suriname and Trinidad & Tobago while hoping (without too much confidence, it must be said) that in Guyana the newly installed People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government will turn its back on its past record of partisan rule and corruption.
