PERU: Alva grilled by congress

Four opposition parties presented a motion of censure against the economy and finance minister, María Antonieta Alva, on 9 September for alleged mishandling of resources to combat the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Alva was twice summoned to congress in the last week to face a hostile interrogation by deputies in marathon sessions. No economy and finance minister had previously been summoned to appear before Peru’s congress for 14 years and it is necessary to go back 141 years to 1879 to find the last minister with a comparable portfolio to be censured.
