BOLIVIA: Áñez approval slides as campaigning resumes

The primary goal of the protests that swept Bolivia in August was to ensure that the country’s general election would be held on 6 September. In the end, the interim government appeared to get its way instead, with the vote delayed (for a third time) until 18 October [WR-20-33]. But the blockades and demonstrations were not entirely in vain, as 6 September instead delivered an official return to electoral campaigning, for the first time since activities were initially suspended back in March; it seems that despite continued warnings of the dangers of holding an election during the pandemic, Jeanine Áñez’s administration has recognised that the possibility of further delays has been taken decisively off the table.
