BRAZIL: Rio police intervention in gang war leaves high toll

A confrontation between rival drug gangs in Rio, and the police claimed 25 lives in the second half of October.  The episode attracted more than the usual international attention because it came a fortnight after Rio was selected as the venue for the 2016 Olympics. This has spurred the government into taking additional security measures.
