In brief: Industrial production shows signs of recovery in Mexico

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released its latest figures on industrial activity, which show that industrial production in Mexico fell 11.6% year-on-year in July 2020 compared with July 2019. Activity in the construction sub-sector saw the biggest decrease, dropping 23.7%, followed by manufacturing industries (-9.5%); electricity, water and gas generation and distribution (-8.8%); and mining (-3.0%). Nonetheless the monthly industrial activity index (Imai) saw a positive variation in July compared with June, growing 6.9% after the return to a ‘new normal’ and the reopening of the Mexican economy, following containment measures implemented to tackle the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
