Renewed Mapuche conflict raises fresh concerns

The long-running conflict between the indigenous Mapuche and the Chilean authorities, which has gripped the southern region of La Araucanía for decades, has flared up once again. With it is reignited the discussion over the Chilean state’s relationship with the Mapuche, the country’s largest indigenous people, estimated to number around 10% of the population; while some Chileans agree with the government narrative branding the actions of Mapuche activists as terrorism, many believe that Mapuche demands for better political representation and the return of their ancestral lands are legitimate, and should be attended.
