GUATEMALA: Eviction of indigenous families reignites familiar concerns

The violent eviction in August of 40 indigenous families from their homes in the village of Cubilgüitz, Alta Verapaz department, is one of various recent incidents to have reignited concerns about the violation of human rights of indigenous people in relation to land disputes. It comes as the international community is also warning of a weakening of the agrarian and human rights institutions set up to protect the rights of these groups under the current government led by President Alejandro Giammattei, which took office in January.
