Proposed tax rises spark concern. On 2 October President Luis Abinader was compelled to reassure the Dominican public that “any tax rises would be agreed with the population, and if some have to be eliminated, they will be eliminated, and other sources of income will be sought”. His remarks followed an outcry stemming from his government’s 2021 budget proposal, submitted to congress the previous day, which included various temporary tax rises aimed at addressing the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
