CHILE: Pressure to reform the Carabineros grows

The widespread human rights violations which Chile’s Carabineros are accused of having committed since social unrest erupted in October 2019 have driven calls for members of the force to be held accountable for their actions, and for a wide-ranging reform of the militarised police. Such calls – from civil society, the political opposition, and NGOs – have only grown as ongoing protests are being continuously met with repression, increasing the pressure on President Sebastián Piñera’s government to address them.
