PARAGUAY: Abdo Benítez bows to internal pressure

For months, Paraguayan civil society groups and the political opposition have been calling for President Mario Abdo Benítez to make changes to his cabinet and replace questioned or ineffective ministers. Abdo Benítez has consistently ignored these calls and avoided the customary reshuffle after completing another year in office in August. But following criticisms from leading figures in the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC), he has finally decided to start swinging the axe. The extent of the ministerial changes remains unclear, as is whether they can help to restore confidence in the Abdo Benítez administration.
