PARAGUAY | Warnings from air travel sector. On 7 October, the Junta de Representantes de Líneas Aéreas Internacionales en Paraguay (Jurcaip) – the organization that represents international airlines operating in Paraguay – issued a statement warning of the adverse effects that the continued closure of air travel will have on both the industry and the country. “Historically, Paraguay has had the lowest level of air connectivity in all of Latin America”, the Jurcaip recalls, going on to warn that “Therefore, to postpone the reopening of regular air travel services not only affects the sustainability of the entire chain of aeronautical and tourism sectors, but could also produce dire consequences which could geographically isolate [the country] even more”. Commercial flights have been suspended in Paraguay, which also closed its land borders, since the start of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in March, although a limited number of flights to Uruguay have been running since mid-September. The Paraguayan government announced that it would be reopening some other international air connections in October, although it had not given a specific date for this as of the time of the Jurcaip statement – which urged the government to do so. “The opening of the airport can no longer wait”, the statement concludes.
