BRAZIL: Forty Rio favelas targeted for 'pacification

The government of Rio de Janeiro state has announced plans to apply the experience of the Unidades de Polí­cia Pacificadora (UPP), which last year proved successful in seven favelas [SSR-09-07], to a further 40 favelas this year. This consists of establishing permanent police presence in the slum districts, after sending in 'shock' contingents of military police to deal with the entrenched and highly armed drug gangs.
