ARGENTINA: Struggling with confidence issues

The Argentine government is facing a serious loss of public and private confidence in its ability to plot a path back to growth for the domestic economy. This has translated into a lack of confidence in the peso, which is steadily losing value against the US dollar. Meanwhile, the government’s reliance on a nationwide quarantine to try to contain the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and limit the number of infections has delivered poor results, eroding confidence in this strategy, while pummelling the economy. All of this is producing a vicious cycle that will be hard for the government led by President Alberto Fernández to overcome unless it shakes up its policies.
