Nicaragua’s legislature last week ratified a new so-called ‘foreign agents’ law. Along with two other as yet-unapproved bills (on cyber security and life imprisonment) [WR-20-40], the initiative has been strongly condemned by the local opposition and international community as a ramping up of repression by the government led by President Daniel Ortega ahead of general elections in November 2021. It comes despite continued foreign pressure on the Ortega government over the crackdown which it began in April 2018 on opponents, who it accuses of attempting to stage a coup.
