HONDURAS: Pre-presidential line-up preempts familiar concerns

Politician, banker, and former convict Yani Rosenthal recently launched his pre-presidential bid for Honduras’s traditional opposition Partido Liberal (PL) ahead of March 2021 presidential primaries and the November 2021 election. Rosenthal’s stint in a US prison for laundering drug proceeds for the Los Cachiros drug-trafficking organisation appeared not to serve as a deterrent for his bid. Two leading contenders for the presidential nomination for the ruling Partido Nacional (PN), congress president Mauricio Oliva and Tegucigalpa mayor Nasry Asfura, are also facing corruption allegations. This has stoked familiar concerns regarding links between the political establishment and crime which have intensified under the current administration led by President Juan Orlando Hernández, who has faced allegations (but no charges) along with the PN after a US court convicted his brother in October 2019 of drug trafficking [WR-20-19].
