REGION: Environmental defenders seek international action

International NGO Global Witness reported in July that around the world, 212 environmental defenders – activists and community leaders fighting against environmental destruction and the human rights abuses that often go alongside – were killed in 2019. Colombia was deemed by far the most dangerous country in the world for environmental defenders, with 64 murdered last year. Venezuela, Peru, and Bolivia also registered deaths, and Global Witness acknowledged that the real death toll was likely far higher, while many more faced death threats, assault, arrest, and forced displacement.
