PERU: Vizcarra bogged down in corruption claims

Presidential corruption cases have become familiar fare in Peru, with four of the previous six incumbents having been charged and arrested after leaving office, and a fifth, Alan García (1985-1990; 2006-2011), committing suicide before the police could detain him in 2019. President Martín Vizcarra survived a recent impeachment attempt and remains immune from prosecution until he steps down in July 2021 but has taken a head start on his predecessors by becoming the country’s first president to be put under criminal investigation for corruption while still in office.
