ECUADOR-US | Further signs of a thaw. The INCSR 2010 report released by the State Department on 1 March commended Ecuador on its performance — and dropped a heavy hint that things would be better if the US were still able to base maritime antidrugs surveillance on Ecuadorean airfields. This appeal was reiterated on 8 March by Drew Schufletowski, head of the US embassy's antidrugs office, who pointed to the 'huge gap in the ocean' about which there is currently little information. This comes on the heels of public praise for Ecuador's drug interception record by the US ambassador in Quito [SSR-10-02].
