VENEZUELA: Controversial police unit faces scrutiny

Javier Tarazona, the director of Venezuelan human rights NGO Fundaredes, shared a video on 16 November showing members of the national police’s special action force (Faes) threatening a farm owner in the western state of Zulia, allegedly preparing to kill him, until local police officers intervened. Since the formation of the Faes back in 2016, its officers have frequently been accused of such extra-judicial violence – it was notable, therefore, that on 17 November the attorney general, Tarek Saab, issued arrest warrants for the six Faes officers caught on camera by Tarazona.
