Continuing to discriminate against private energy firms

Mexico’s energy regulatory commission (CRE) announced on 13 October that its board would centralise the issuing of permits. The change is reportedly in line with instructions by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to ensure that no more permits are issued for private energy generation and commercialisation ventures. This would invalidate regulation from 2017 and 2018 designed to speed up new electricity generation projects as well as energy imports and exports. The CRE alleges that the aim of the change is to combat corruption and improve transparency in the sector. But private energy firms see them as further efforts by the López Obrador administration to limit private sector activity to protect the state-owned oil and electricity firms- Pemex and the CFE.
