Gov’t complains about low levels of bank lending

Mexico’s Finance Minister, Arturo Herrera, has criticised commercial banks that operate in the country for failing to increase the provision of credit to the population. Herrera complains that banks have not fully used the credit lines made available by the central bank (Banxico) to help mitigate the effects that the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has had on the Mexico’s domestic economy and stimulate an recovery. The minister says that banks are not taking enough risks at this critical time, demanding collaterals of up to 90% even though their capitalisation index has increased from 15% to 17% since the pandemic started.
