POINTERS

BRAZIL | Rio sees sharp fall in violent crime. The public security institute of Rio de Janeiro state reports that there were 1,894 violent deaths in its jurisdiction in the first quarter of this year, 16.5% fewer than in the same period of 2009 and the lowest figure since records began in 1991. This has been interpreted as a reflection of the success of the “pacification" policy applied in the favelas (slum districts) of the state capital, the city of Rio de Janeiro, which involves the establishment of permanent police presence and the provision of social services.
