COLOMBIA: Entrapment scandal puts peace process at risk

Senator Roy Barreras, of Colombia’s centre-right Partido de la U, in November accused former attorney general Néstor Humberto Martínez (2016-2019) of conspiring with the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to organise “undercover entrapment operations to discredit the peace process”. This allegation is not new, but the decision by Barreras and four other senators to bring this matter to congress was a significant development, the catalyst for which was the emergence of some 24,000 audio recordings linked to the case in question, revealing a tangled web of crime and corruption.
