Introduction: The destruction of the tourism industry

The second quarter of 2020 was far and away the worst ever experienced by the tourist industry in Latin American and the Caribbean. With bewildering speed, the coronavirus pandemic had begun to spread throughout the world, prompting a range of sudden and drastic emergency measures starting in March and gaining momentum in April-June. Governments imposed curfews and ‘shelter at home’ orders. They closed borders and airports and announced a range of health-related travel restrictions. Travellers were stranded in different parts of the world, many aboard cruise ships, which seemed particularly vulnerable to contagion.
