In brief: Mexico to invest in expanding internet access

* Mexico’s state-owned electricity company Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) has announced plans to invest M$11bn (US$557m) in subsidiary CFE Telecomunicaciones e Internet para Todos (CFE TEIT), which works to expand internet access throughout Mexico, promoting digital inclusion to tackle social and economic inequality. CFE TEIT’s general director Raymundo Artís Espriú outlined plans to provide internet access in public squares, health centres, hospitals, schools, and communal spaces. According to the business plan unveiled by Artís Espriú, CFE TEIT will aim to provide 200,000 free internet access points by 2025, and also to expand fibre-optic connectivity across much of the country, to increase data transport capacity.
